Social media site Tumblr recently released its 2016 Year In Review Top Models List. Reality TV star Kendall Jenner took pole position, cementing her status as a rising superstar in the modelling world. LUXE Models discusses.
This has been the year of Kendall Jenner. The reality TV star was everywhere in 2016 and has now become one of the highest paid models on earth. Across her short career, Kendall has worked with huge industry names like Michael Kors, Diane von Furstenberg, Karl Lagerfeld and Marc Jacobs.
The peak of Jenner’s modelling career came in September, when she was asked to front the iconic September issue of Vogue magazine. A few months later on her 21st birthday, Kendall proved her credentials as a style icon, by channelling Paris Hilton, winning praise from her fellow reality star, as well as fashionistas worldwide. It was only a matter of time before the awards started rolling in.
The fashion community went crazy, when industry body the British Fashion Council announced that Kendall was nominated for ‘International Model of the Year’ at the 2016 Fashion Awards. Kendall faced stiff competition for this gong, with stars like Gigi Hadid and home grown talent such as Adwoa Aboah also nominated. Kendall lost out to Gigi on that occasion, but now she’s got her own back.
Teen Vogue writes that Kendall Jenner was crowned Tumblr’s top model of 2016, while her best friend Gigi came in second place. This is a huge honour for Kendall, as it illustrates just how popular she is with millennials, who are the fashion industry’s main market. Younger people (aged 13 to 35), make up over 50% of Tumblr’s audience, so Kendall really is capturing the hearts and minds of millennials.
So who else turned up on Tumblr’s 2016 Year In Review Top Models List, apart from Kendall and Gigi? Last year’s winner, Cara Delevingne, was bumped down to third, possibly because she’s started branching out into movies recently. Cara was followed by Bella Hadid in fourth, while there were big modelling names further down the list too, with Karlie Kloss in seventh. Also Nyle DiMarco was the highest ranking male model, at 11th place, with Lucky Blue Smith following one spot behind.
Social is everything
If you learn anything here, let it be that in 2016, you have to build up an amazing presence on social media, if you want to make it as a model. Stars like Kendall Jenner, who has a colossal 69m+ followers on Instagram, are increasingly giving fans a glimpse of their lives by posting snaps, especially selfies, on social media, promoting themselves as models. If you do the same, who knows what could happen!
