The Karl Lagerfeld-designed Chanel show was undoubtedly a highlight of the recently-held Paris Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2017. For the event, the iconic designer transformed Chanel’s runway into a data centre, showing the rising influence of technology in fashion.
Highlights from Paris
Paris is a true global fashion capital. This was the city where Haute Couture was invented and the place where legendary designer Coco Chanel pushed the boundaries of fashion. Many of today’s top fashion houses, from Chanel and Dior to Givenchy and Vuitton are based in Paris today.
Twice every year Paris holds Fashion Week, where top designers come together to reveal the latest trends. During Paris Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2017, we saw that statement coats, experimental sleeves and feel-good fashion are all set to become stylish. It also became clearer that Paris is becoming a major fashion innovator, with designer like Karl Lagerfeld pushing it to the next level.
Chanel Data Centre
Karl Lagerfeld famously serves as Head Designer and Creative Director for Chanel, which held its latest Fashion Week show at Paris’ iconic Grand Palais. Chanel is known for hosting the most striking shows of Paris Fashion Week and this time around Karl didn’t disappoint, according to Fortune.
Karl turned the Chanel runway into a massive data centre, complete with black data boxes, cables and wires. The look was topped off by a sign hung high above the catwalk, which was emblazoned with the words ‘Chanel Data Centre,’ making the brands intentions very obvious to attendees.
Depending on tech
From the minute the show opened, it was obvious that Chanel really decided to run with the data centre theme. Immediately, models trotted out in all-white tweed suits, topped off with white plastic helmets, in a look evoking Star Wars. Throughout the show, we saw more striking Tweed suits, along with metallic ballerina shoes, ‘blinking’ handbags and other sci-fi inspired pieces.
The 83 year old designer commented on the concept after the show ended. Explaining why he chose this theme, Karl argued that “we all depend on it,” referring to technology. Going on, Karl said: “Imagine your life without the telephone and the next step will be artificial intelligence and robots.”
Re-shaping fashion forever
Karl makes a really valid point. In today’s world, where everyone has a smartphone and broadband is becoming increasingly seen as the fourth utility, technology is inescapable. We’ve seen before that fashion and technology are becoming more connected by the day, with new innovations re-shaping the industry. With Karl’s Chanel show, we saw that this trend will continue for years to come!
